Eating Your Way To Good Health

July 15th, 2010

I can still hear my mother screaming at me across the dinner table. “Eat your peas!” she would bellow at the top of her lungs. Let me tell you, peas can be pretty disgusting to a 13 year old. But I listened and to this day, I am glad I did. Having been a very ill child, it took lots of good food and some help from a few supplements to get me back to health. And the beauty of it all is that I did it WITHOUT harmful drugs. Yes, you really can eat your way to good health. Hopefully, after reading this, you’ll know how.

While a complete course on nutrition would probably put you to sleep, some basics should get you started in the right direction and put you on track to having a healthier you.

Before we begin, the one thing you need to understand is that you must eat a balanced diet. Too much of one kind of food, no matter how good it is, and not enough of another food group is not going to produce the results that you’re looking for. What exactly then do we need to do?

For starters, lots of fresh fruit. I’m not talking about the canned peaches that you get in the supermarket. Canned fruit has very little value and should be avoided. All fruit that you eat should be fresh. One thing about fruit that you need to know. Don’t eat melons, cantaloupes, and watermelons with other kinds of foods. Eat them separately. Other than that restriction, try to have at least three servings of fruit each day.

Vegetables are also very good for you. Again, fresh is better than frozen and certainly better than cooked. Cooking vegetables pretty much kills all the vitamins that are in them. The best form of vegetables is to drink fresh vegetable juice, especially carrot juice. You’re going to need a juicer for this. Trust me, one of the best investments you’ll ever make. Drinking fresh vegetable juice will allow the vitamins and minerals to absorb in the bloodstream quicker.

If you’re going to eat grains, eat only whole grains. This goes for bread and cereal. On thing you have to know about eating grains is that you have to chew them slowly and thoroughly because grains can be very hard to digest.

Nuts and seeds are also terrific for good health. Only eat fresh nuts and seed. Stay away from salted peanuts as they are very bad for you. The amount of salt in them can send your blood pressure through the roof, not to mention how much water it will make you retain.

If you’re going to use any sweetening, use only fresh fruit or a little honey. Stay away from anything made with sugar or corn syrup, especially high fructose corn syrup.

If you’re going to eat meat, stay away from beef and pork. Try to eat things like chicken and turkey. Fresh fish is also very good, but not frozen fish and stay away from shellfish.

Good health through eating right is really a lot more complicated than what can be put into a brief article, but if you start with some basics, you’ll begin to feel a lot better than you do now, especially if you’ve been living on fast food and chocolate layer cakes.

Natural Treatments For Headaches And Migraines

July 15th, 2010

Headaches are a royal pain, and not in the neck. I suffered from headaches daily for ten years and was addicted to extra strength pain killers. I won’t mention any particular brand as it really doesn’t matter. What does matter is that because of this I began to suffer from terrible anemia, most likely from stomach bleeding. Fortunately, I didn’t develop ulcers but did have to get off the pain killers with a blood count of between 8.2 and 8.8. The doctors didn’t know how I was walking around.

The truth is, painkillers, like all drugs, can be very dangerous. It doesn’t matter whether you are taking aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen or whatever. Each one has its little and not so little dangers. Oh the drug companies will tell you that you’re only at risk if you take these pain pills for an extended period of time. The point is, why have to take them at all when there are natural alternatives? And yes, the dangers are quite real.

Aspirin, even the coated and buffered aspirins can literally burn a hole right through your stomach. That’s right, aspirins are the second leading cause of ulcers in the United States. This is actually the main reason that acetaminophen was created.

However, acetaminophen also has its dangers. It has been determined that long term use of acetaminophen can cause liver damage. You no longer have to be a heavy drinker to destroy your liver.

What about ibuprofen? Well, for you ladies, it has been determined that ibuprofen can lead to breast cancer. Oh but it gets worse. Ibuprofen usage has been linked to cardiovascular problems, asthma, pregnancy miscarriages and small bowel problems.

The biggest problem with all these pain killers is that unless you really know your brand, as these are all generic terms, you have no idea what you’re getting, unless of course it is common aspirin. But how many people know what pain relievers contain acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or whatever else may be in the brand name they’re taking? Many do not know.

With all the dangers that have been proven by taking these drugs, you would wonder why anybody would take them at all. Well, the truth is, you don’t have to. There are some very natural treatments for headaches and other aches and pains that are very effective.

Eating a balanced diet and taking vitamins will help a great deal in even preventing you from getting headaches. One herb in particular is excellent in preventing and eliminating your headache. The herb is feverfew. This herb can be used not only for treating headaches but for also reducing fever and relieving the symptoms of arthritis. It is also excellent in battling digestive problems.

Aside from feverfew, magnesium, vitamin B2, and Coenzyme Q10 are natural supplements that are quite effective for treating headaches and migraines.

So the next time you’re thinking of running to the medicine cabinet to grab your pain killer of choice, please remember, there are natural and better treatments for both headaches and migraines.

Selecting The Right Health Care Facilities For You

September 1st, 2009

Choosing the right health care facilities may now be an easier task, all thanks to a large variety of services that are now available for the elderly. Some of the facilities available for retired folk may look like a state or a small community of their own. You may also have an in-house health care if you wish to stay in your own house. Below are some guidelines on how you can choose the right one.
You can also take a look at the activities provided. Certain health care facilities provide community-based activities such as congregate meal programs, financial counseling programs and home maker services. This can help boost the productivity of the elderly, and encourage them to contribute to society even at their late age.
First, you will need to assist your elderly family member into going through an assessment process. This is an important step to help determine what level of healthcare your loved one may require from the home. If your loved one is still independent and does not have any recurring or pressing mental or physical problems which may require a more close-knitted health care service, then you may go along with home care. This allows your loved one to remain in their homes while still getting proper assistance.
You will also need to check on whether the health care facilities you are considering are duly registered with the appropriate agencies. This will also serve as protection in case you have any complaints regarding the quality of health care that they provide. You are also much safer when you choose to sign up with accredited health care facilities.

Selecting The Right Long Term Care Insurance Company For You

August 31st, 2009

Becoming an expert with the foundational options and features of a good long term care insurance (LTCI) policy needs taking enough time to educate yourself before making your final decision.

This will also make sure that you get the policy which will fit your particular needs best. The next step is to find the insurance provider that will give you the best offers. Since there are a number of LTCI carriers to choose from, here are a few suggestions for selecting a company that offers a quality product and is worthy of your trust in the many years ahead.

The Big News You’ll Never Read in the Media Among the companies that offer LTCI, there are only a few companies that have a good reputation. By that, I simply meant that these companies should have distinguished themselves over a long period of time as financially solid, rate-stable carriers with an excellent customer service record.

Unfortunately, we see so many stories in the media these days of other LTCI companies whose record in these category is being challenged seriously. There are even reports that some may have appeared to deny claims in order to make a profit. Others have had to request hefty premium increases because of a much higher number of claims than they had projected for assisted care.

While some of these stories might be true. what we don’t hear is the good stuff: There are LTCI companies that really adhere to their claims of the customer being #1. Finding an LTCI Company That is Worthy of Your Trust: The June 18, 2007 issue of Newsweek magazine recommended the following four companies as being major carriers that can be worthy of your consideration: Genworth, John Hancock, MetLife, and Allianz Life.

Of course, that does not mean that there aren’t other fine companies represented in the LTCI field, but the four carriers identified by Newsweek are among the oldest and financially strongest in the industry. They also have extremely favorable records of customer satisfaction. Health Factors to Consider Before Buying an LTCI Policy Genworth, John Hancock, MetLife and Allianz Life are all fine choices if you are in excellent health.

However, if you have health issues that are not serious enough to render you uninsurable, but will most likely disqualify you for ” preferred ” rates, the company you choose can have a significant impact on your premium.
The main reason for this is because each company has its own underwriting procedures that it uses for rating the policyholders.

These procedures can different from one company to the next. For example, one company will not issue a ” preferred ” rating to anyone who uses simply a single blood pressure medication, while others will allow the use of up to four of these medications and still award the highest rate classification. If you have more serious health conditions, the difference in the way individual carriers treat those issues can be even more dramatic and you will need continuous care. In other words, there are some sicknesses that one carrier may accept maybe because for rejection by another provider.

This is where having the help and assistance of a knowledgable and experienced agent who can choose from several top companies in the LTCI field, can be a real asset in finding the company that is not only trustworthy and reliable, but also best fits your particular needs and health history.

Tips For Your Baby’s Dental Care

August 31st, 2009

The dental health of babies has impact on later life. Here are some important tips to make sure that you provide proper dental care to your babies. It is considered a milestone when your baby earns his first baby tooth. Having your child get his baby tooth is a sign that your baby has arrived to a new level of progress. The milk teeth are temporary but they still need proper dental care and attention just like adults.

Parents are often unaware that the baby teeth have important roles on the upcoming status of the permanent teeth such as its spacing, health, and alignment. If the milk teeth are damaged or lost at an early stage, your baby is running on a greater risk of having poor and misaligned permanent teeth. This case often leads to open bite and jaw pains later on. Also, the permanent ones that spring after the milk teeth are subject to decay if the milk teeth are already decayed.

This compels us to provide proper family dental care even during infancy. Even before the first tooth of the baby protrudes, you should clean his/her mouth. One way of doing so is through a damp cloth or a finger brush being rubbed into his/her gums after feeding. The food debris is removed during this process and also makes the infant adapted to mouth cleaning. After the arrival of the milk teeth, you have to make sure to wipe these teeth regularly especially after feeding.

Take note that baby teeth are not as strong as adult teeth. If the baby teeth do not undergo proper dental care, the teeth are more likely to decay and develop cavities easier. Surely no parent wants their child’s dental health jeopardized – especially at an early stage. Also, most dental health care facilities do not provide dental treatment to kids below 3 years old, so it is up to you to maintain his/her dental health. For your baby’s dental health, these are three tips that you have to keep in your mind:

Do not let your baby get used to sleeping with a feeding bottle in his/her mouth – especially if it is not water. Whether it is milk or juice, never give harmful bacteria on the child’s mouth something to feed on. Chances are he/she would develop the nursing bottle syndrome, which is a serious dental disorder. Even an infant’s mouth is not exempted from having bacteria inside. These bacteria feed on sugar and if the bottle is left overnight with a drink with sugar, the bacteria secrete acids that attack the enamel of the baby’s tooth, causing it to rot and decay. Instead of using milk or juice before bedtime, use water.

Soft bristles and a soft head are essential to a baby’s toothbrush. Also, replace the baby’s toothbrush every 3 months. The permanent teeth begin its development at around 6 years old. Before reaching this age, ensure that you use low fluoride toothpaste as high intake of fluoride damage the teeth. According to the studies of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, it is best to you use fluoridated toothpaste only after your baby has reached 2 years old.

By properly cleaning his/her mouth, you are teaching your child the significance of proper dental care. Having this knowledge would be a great advantage later on. Early education on dental health care would prevent you from wasting money on dental treatments and emergency dental care. With this in mind, you can sleep sound because your baby’s teeth are in good condition.

It will be useful for out to find out that there are three types of treatment performed;

• External radiation therapy (passing the radiations in the gland affected).

• The complete removal of prostate gland by surgery (Radical prostectomy).

The other detail to point out is that although the risk factors of this prostate disease are known, one might often wonder if there actually are ways to guarantee that one never gets the cancer.
